The Millersburg Friends of the Park is a local not-for-profit group working with the Millersburg Park Department to improve the local parks in Millersburg. We teamed up with Leathers and Associates (designers of Tommy's Kid Castle in Goshen and Little Paw's in Nappanee) to accomplish this goal by creating a new community playground at Cook Station Park.

A community celebration was held on October 13th, 2004 at the Millersburg School Gymnasium. During this event, the designer from Leathers and Associates unveiled our unique playground design. This design was created based on input from our local experts, the children of Millersburg. This event marked the beginning our our journey on the Millersburg Playground Express.

Between October 13th 2004 and September 5th, 2005, the Playground Express Project Committee worked hard to raise money, plan for the build, and find volunteers to help create this unique and educational playground.

Construction began early on September 6th and continued feverishly through the evening on September 10th. We did not quite make our deadline, but enough of the playground was complete that children gave it a run through late on the 10th. After a few minor finishing details were completed on September 11th, 2005, the playground officially opened and has been busy ever since!

The Millersburg Playground Express is a handicap accessible playground that meets strict national guidelines for safety. The playground goals are:

1. Promote healthier lifestyles for children by providing a fun playground that encourages vigorous physical fitness through its design and structure.

2. Educate children about our environment and the benefits of recycling by using signs throughout the playground that quiz children about recycled material used in the playground.

3. Promote literacy by utilizing a unique children's amphitheatre within the playground for summer reading programs and activities.

This playground will allow for future activities and educational programs. Local and nearby community schools will be able to use this park as a teaching tool for students while allowing the children to have fun as they learn. Teachers will be able to plan learning activities and lesson plans around information signs that will be placed within the playground. Surrounding community schools will be welcome to use this playground and incorporate our facts, information and playground into their teaching lessons. A small amphitheatre with a stage and seats has been incorporated into our design and will help stimulate children’s creative talents and allow for the possibility of a summer reading program at the playground.
